AFC Hornchurch

Altrincham Club Crest image

Originating as Upminster Wanderers in 1923, the club played in the Romford League until after the Second World War when they joined the Spartan League and competed in their Division One East. A move to their present location in Bridge Avenue came in 1953, when they joined The Delphian League and changed their name to Hornchurch & Upminster.

In 1961 the club were Delphian runners-up and their name was changed again to Hornchurch F.C., as the club was invited to join the Athenian Division One where they won the championship in 1967. Then, after a fine run to the Fifth Round of the first ever FA Vase competition, ‘The Urchins’ were invited to join the Isthmian League.

In 1989 a fire burnt down the Bridge Avenue Ground clubhouse and the club struggled to establish themselves as an Isthmian club. The new century brought a change of fortunes when three consecutive promotions under the guidance of Mick Marsden, took the club from Division Three, through the Isthmian Premier to the Conference South.

Sadly all was not well off the field and Hornchurch FC collapsed, to be re-born under the name of A.F.C. Hornchurch in the 2005-2006 season, competing in the Essex Senior League. Exciting campaigns brought the championships of the Essex and Isthmian Division One titles, followed by play-off drama when losing in the semi-finals in 2008 and then enjoying a fine F.A.Cup run in 2009.

Consolidation for two more seasons in the Isthmian Premier prepared the club for another promotion push. Under Jim McFarlane’s guidance, AFC Hornchurch won a Conference South place through the Play-Offs but sadly, in retrospect, just two extra points were needed in the 2012-2013 campaign to avoid their immediate return to The Isthmian League.
