Middle aged supporters of Alfreton Town must be thrilled with the progress made by their little Derbyshire club that was competing with average success in The Midland Counties League just 35 years ago.
Steady progress appeared to be helping the club edge their way up the non-league pyramid of leagues. A move into The Northern Counties East in 1982 was followed by five years threatening the leaders and eventually under the managership of Shaun Egan, the championship and promotion to Division One of The Northern Premier League was achieved in 1987.
Once again consolidation seemed the aim but gradually, after the introduction of a new managerial team of Danny Hague & Paul Mitchell, appointed by the now Chairman Mr Egan, a run of 9th, 6th 4th and promotion as runners up, took ‘The Reds’ into The Premier Division.
Sadly the euphoria was short lived as relegation back through the ranks in three seasons saw Alfreton Town competing back in The Northern Counties East in 1999. The corner had been turned however, and three solid campaigns climaxed in a wonderful array of silverware in 2001-2002. Under the guidance of Chris Wilder and David Lloyd, The Championship and Promotion, The Derbyshire Senior Cup plus The League and Presidents Cups were all won and this wonderful season was immediately followed by the Northern Premier League Division One title and then qualification to join the newly formed Conference North in 2004.
Long serving supporters of ‘The Reds’ were thrilled with the change in fortunes and, as in the past, the club settled down to consolidate and prepare for steady progress. When you look at manager Nicky Law’s record, with league placing of 16th, 3rd, 3rd and then promotion as champions, it lifts Alfreton Town into the very top layer of Non-League Football and who would bet against a challenge for a Football League place in the future?
