Although playing at present in the second rung of Non-League football, Altrincham are one of the most impressive and famous clubs outside The Football League. Starting out in 1903 in The Manchester League, Altrincham moved through the Lancashire Combination (1911-1919) and Cheshire County (1919-1968) before becoming a founder member of the Northern Premier League in 1968-1969.

The club’s golden era started when they qualified for the newly installed Alliance Football League in 1979. They promptly won the first two championships, but sadly for “Alty’ automatic promotion to The Football League hadn’t been introduced and they failed to obtain entry through the League Clubs’ end of season poll.

The club enjoyed a quite incredible FA Cup record throughout the last 35 years and just imagine the pride and excitement enjoyed by players, committee and supporters as their very special club in the shadow of Manchester giants City and United, kept qualifying for the FA Cup competition proper and competing, with much success against League opposition.

In the twenty-six seasons between 1971-1972 and 1996-1997 Altrincham only failed to reach the First Round Proper of The FA Cup on four occasions. During that time they were drawn against five clubs from Division One (the top division), losing at Liverpool and Spurs (away), drawing with Everton and Spurs before losing the replays and beating Birmingham City (away)!

The fact that most of the Altrincham managers were given the chance to build their squads and develop their tactics can be seen from the records of the last 35 years. The club has never been one to overspend by paying silly wages or transfer fees that couldn’t be afforded and at present the club is competing strongly in The Blue Square Conference North.
