Billericay Town

Altrincham Club Crest image

After ninety years working their way through Romford & District, Mid Essex, South Essex Combination and Essex Olympian leagues to The Essex Senior League, Billericay Town really hit the sporting headlines with three appearances at Wembley in FA Vase Finals.

All three campaigns brought victories, although one was after a replay, but the confidence spread throughout the club and the club’s successes in the Essex Senior League brought promotion to The Athenian League and immediate championship in 1978-1979.

The Isthmian League were proud to accept John Newman’s Athenian Champions and FA Vase winners to their ranks in 1979. Then immediate promotion as Champions of Division Two was celebrated but the club’s wonderful rise through the ranks had peaked.

The Isthmian Premier proved a tougher proposition and after battling to survive for five seasons, relegation was suffered and a drop down to Division Two North followed two years later. However manager John Kendall took over in 1990 and by 1998-1999 ‘The Blues’ were back in the Isthmian Premier Division.

Seven different managers have looked after the club during their substantial stay in the Premier Division and although finishing at the foot of the table in 2004, the leagues were re-organized and premier status retained. Since then, two play-offs have been lost but in 2012 there was no need for a play-off as, under Manager Craig Edwards, Billericay Town qualified for the Blue Square South as Isthmian League Champions. Sadly the pressure proved too great and the club suffered a quick return to Isthmian football..
