Bishop Auckland

Currently Playing In:

Northern League Division One

Bishop Auckland were one of the most famous names in Amateur Football when football resumed after the Second World War. The club regularly supplied their stars for the England Amateur International squad and of course won The FA Amateur Cup a record ten times in eighteen finals, including three successive victories in four consecutive Wembley Finals between 1953 and 1957.

‘The Bishops’ were the team to beat, they led the North East challenge for all honours until the abolishment of the amateurs and of course their famous national cup competition. Bishop Auckland did move forward into the new league structure by qualifying for the Northern Premier League in 1988 and just two years later were competing in the NPL Premier Division.

Long serving and well respected managers Harry Dunn and Tony Lee guided the club through an enjoyable stay at this level.  Runners-Up in 1997 was their best position achieved, but five years later the Bishops were relegated after their unlucky thirteenth NPL premier campaign.

The Bishop Auckland Kingsway Ground, shared with the local cricket club had become a famous sporting venue , but with no ground of their own, the club had to share with West Auckland, Shildon and Spennymoor and sadly, inconsistency on the field and insecurity off it, saw the club return to The Northern League Division One in 2006.

Now, having settled into Heritage Park, supporters will be hoping their famous club will be rebuilding and preparing to return for another spell as a leading North Eastern non-league club.
