Brackley Town

Altrincham Club Crest image

One of the most exciting success stories in non-league football must have been provided by Brackley Town who achieved promotion to the Blue Square South, just one step from the peak of football outside the Football League, after taking over one hundred years to reach senior football in the Southern League in 1997.

A club formed in 1890 played in local leagues Banbury & District and North Buckingham shire before settling down in The Hellenic League in 1977. Just one season was spent with The United Counties League in 1983-1984 but otherwise ‘The Saints’ of Brackley built their confidence on and off the field within Hellenic football, until they qualified for The Southern League as Champions. Perhaps they weren’t quite ready, as two seasons later they were back.

However, lessons were obviously learnt. It took just another four campaigns before another The Hellenic Championship took them into The Southern League Division One Midlands and after just two seasons, it was onwards and upwards to The Blue Square North as Champions by eight points.

The satisfaction will be thrilling for all who have helped build this little club into a serious competitor amongst some very big names. When they compete in a Northern Division, which may mean more traveling, the thrill of visiting new rivals and playing at new grounds will be well worth the extra efforts.
