Bridgwater Town

The town of Bridgwater had provided three football clubs by the time the first world war closed down sport for a few years. Then, Bridgwater Town football club emerged but hadn’t really established themselves by the time another war intervened.

However, in 1946-1947 Bridgwater Town did join The Somerset Senior League and by 1949 they were accepted by the Western League. It took two seasons to reach their senior division and the club became a power in the West Country.

Perhaps through a strong desire to play in The Southern League, the club overstretched themselves and in 1984 the club disbanded and reformed three years later as Bridgwater Town 87, building their confidence in the Somerset Senior League.

The club have since worked their way through The Western League and are holding their own in The Southern League. The club’s supporters are amongst the most loyal and supportive in the country and they have been led by highly respected local name such as Pearce, Setter and Hurford who have re-formed the club, built a quality ground and achieved Southern League football.

On the first day of the 2012-2013 season having lost a very well contested and high quality first game of the season at home in The Southern League Division One South West, all the home supporters waited for the players to complete a warm down and gave them a superb reception as they left the field. Maybe this wonderful spirit was inspired by the Olympic Games, but it was appreciated and great to be seen at a football ground on the first day of the season.

Congratulations! That was real support!
