After formation in 1872, the club played as Bury St Edmunds until 1902, then for four years changed to Bury United before becoming Bury Town. After developing in The Norfolk & Suffolk Border League and Essex & Suffolk Border league, ‘The Blues’ joined The Eastern Counties League in 1935 for the first of three periods with The Eastern Counties League.

Apart from one spell in The Metropolitan League from 1964-1971, the club had shuttled between The Eastern Counties and The Southern League. However, Bury Town, having spent five years in the seventies and ten years between 1987 and 1997 in The
Southern League, will be hoping that having now taken a different path to senior leagues, their luck will change, and perhaps they will be able to move into Conference football.

Not many clubs have moved from The Eastern Counties into The Southern League and then up to The Isthmian Premier Division in four seasons. However, under long serving manager Richard Wilkins, Bury Town have proved to be a challenger, with six consecutive finishes in the top seven, including The Championship of the Southern League Midland League, when scoring 115 goals and collecting 102 points.
