Cambridge City

Altrincham Club Crest image

Formed as ‘Cambridge Town’ in 1908, four years before their rivals ‘United’, ‘The Lilywhites’ began competitive life before the First World War in the Bury & District League and The Southern Olympian League.

In 1914 the club played in the Southern Amateur League until 1935 when they joined the progressive Spartan League and have moved steadily up the Non-League pyramid ever since, moving to The Athenian League in 1950 and changing the club name to Cambridge CIty two years later.

In 1958 City qualified for the Southern League and under long serving manager Bill Leivers, the Southern Division Championship was won with promotion to the Premier Division until the re-organization of the Non-league competitions in 2004 placed them in Conference South.

This move didn’t really help the club who suffered from persistent off field problems and after four years of Conference football, the supporters after much painful off field politics, eventually took over the club.  Everyone is now pulling together, battling to re-establish themselves as a power back in The Southern League, with manager Gary Roberts staying loyal to club.
