Chelmsford City

Altrincham Club Crest image

Having joined the Southern League in 1938, the club’s year of formation, Chelmsford City became one of the League’s most reliable members. Three Championships were won in 1945-46, 1967-68 and 1971-1972 as well as the League Cup in 1945-46, 1959-60 and 1990-1991.

Regular appearances in the FA Cup First Round rewarded their loyal supporters who made the club one of the best supported in their league. Re-organization of the league brought Premier Division football in 1982 and signalled the beginning of a five year run in which City were only out of the top five once, finishing ninth in 1985.

A shock relegation followed in the next campaign but was followed immediately by promotion back as champions of The Southern Division, however during those six years from 1983 to 1988, ‘The Clarets reached the Second Round of the FA Cup three times and the First Round once!

The ‘nineties’ proved to be a relatively quiet period for Chelmsford but when the league re-organization took place in 2004, the well respected Essex club became a member of the Isthmian Premier League. Four seasons later a place was earned in The Conference South as Isthmian Champions and in four of the five seasons since, Chelmsford City have lost in the play-offs. Surely they deserve to reach the top very soon.
