Chertsey Town

After their formation in 1890, Chertsey‘s first competitive football was played in the Surrey Intermediate League. Although invited to be founder members of The Surrey Senior League, the club didn’t join until competitive football returned after the Second world war.

The Surrey club moved into their present ground in 1929 but were not known as Chertsey Town until 1950. Having failed to get membership of the Corinthian League the club turned professional and joined The Metropolitan League in 1963, where they competed for three years before returning as amateurs in the Greater London League for a season and then to the Spartan League in 1967.

Although on field successes were not prolific, the club’s ground and general administration were improving regularly and moves through the Spartan and Athenian League into the Isthmian ‘family’ saw the club reach a peak in the Isthmian Premier Division in 1995.

League fortunes have been varied since then and although the club dropped down for period in The Combined Counties League, positives were taken as regular top ten finishes revived confidence and after achieving second place in 2011, Chertsey Town moved up to The Southern League Division One Central.
