A club from the football stronghold of The North East have spent most of their footballing life since 1883 in the shadow of Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough. Joining the Football League’s Third Division North as founder members in 1921, promotion to Division Two was achieved in 1925, for two seasons only. ‘The Quakers’ then played at Football League’s regionalised third level and, between 1958 - 2010, in the Third or Fourth Divisions, although one season was spent as a non-league team in 1989-1990, when, under the inspirational guidance of Brian Little, the club bounced right back from The Conference at the first attempt. Then in 2009-2010 Darlington dropped out of the Football League again and although enjoying the thrill of an FA Trophy triumph at Wembley in 2011, another financial disaster saw the club forced into The Northern League. A new and refreshed ‘Darlington 1883’ immediately stormed to an impressive Championship with 145 goals and 122 points, to earn promotion to The Northern Premier League’s Division One North. In 2013-14 the new Club finished second, but lost the consequent play-off semi-final.

Modern supporters of Darlington have had their loyalty tested by a succession of club saving financial plans which just haven’t worked, but there should be a bright future for the supporters who have stood by the club and are now in control.
