Dartford

Altrincham Club Crest image

Dartford Football Club was formed in the 1890s and their first experience of senior competitive football was in the Kent League. Their home ground was at Watling Street from 1921 and ‘The Darts’ joined the Southern League in 1926 where they soon established themselves as a leading non-league club by winning the Championship and Kent Senior Cup in 1930-31 and 1931-32 under the guidance of manager Bill Collier.

Renowned Dartford manager Ernie Morgan enjoyed successes in two spells in charge which started with promotion to the Premier Division in 1969. This was followed by successes in the Kent County Cup competitions and after a year with rivals Maidstone United, Morgan inspired a wonderful F.A.Trophy run to Wembley in the same 1973-1974 season as they won their first Southern League Championship by an impressive seven points.

Since the formation of the Alliance Premier League, Dartford experienced two short stays at the top level, but following off-field problems that saw the club re-form in 1992, hard work and steady management saw ‘The Darts’ steadily climb the non-league pyramid through The Kent League and The Southern League regional divisions.

A move across to Division One of The Isthmian League in 2006 proved a great success as an immediate championship took the club into The Premier Division and two years later another promotion to The Conference South was also achieved as Champions.

Tony Burman was proving a great success as manager and after two more seasons, promotion to Conference Premier was achieved through the play-offs and a top ten finish in their first season bodes well for the club’s Premier future.
