Gainsborough Trinity

Altrincham Club Crest image

It’s often overlooked that Gainsborough Trinity competed in The Football League from 1896-1912, having built their reputation in The Midland Counties League since1889. ‘The Blues’ returned in 1912 and remained in the midland competition until 1960, when they moved on for just one season into The Central Alliance, before a third spell in the Midland Counties which lasted seven seasons.

As founder members of The Northern Premier League in 1968, Gainsborough Trinity had built an unbroken record competing in the N.P.L. for twenty seven seasons when, by finishing tenth, they just qualified for the brand new Conference North. ‘The Blues’ had only finished in the top ten in nine of the 26 seasons but they have never been relegated in their senior ‘non-league’ history !

In every way, Gainsborough Trinity are an example of a sound and solid football club, who have given most of their managers a chance to prove themselves and have always been tough opposition to beat. Under the managerial guidance of Brian Little they achieved fourth place in the Conference North - their highest finishing position after returning from The Football League and have reined their membership at this level for ten seasons.
