Grays Athletic

Currently Playing In:

Isthmian League Premier Division

After formation in 1890, the club’s first senior league was the high powered Athenian competition where they spent a couple of years before the Second World War. This was followed by spells in The London League and The Kent League before returning to The Athenian League in 1958.

It was during their Athenian days that identical twins Jeff and Fred Saxton took up the managerial responsibilities and dedicated their lives to the development of their special club. A move to The Isthmian League was made in 1983 and steady all round improvements took their club up to The Premier level, where apart from three years (1997-2000) they stayed until manager Mark Stimson led them up to Conference football.

Five years in The Conference Premier and two FA Trophy Final successes provided the club’s highlights, but off field problems brought relegation and an enforced drop into the Isthmian League Division One North in 2010. The pendulum has swung back however, and in Grays Athletic’s third season of rebuilding, winning the championship brought promotion back to The Isthmian Premier.
