Hitchin Town

Currently Playing In:

Southern League Premier Division

One of the oldest clubs in the country, Hitchin were formed in 1865 and also possess a wonderful football museum recording their long history. Before joining The Athenian League in 1945, Hitchin had only competed in The Spartan League and The Herts & Middlesex League and have competed in comparatively few leagues.

Not many other senior non-league clubs who have won The Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup and The London Senior Cup, but Hitchin Town competed at the top of amateur football when joined The Athenian League after the second world war and remained there until moving on to the Isthmian League in 1964.

When the Athenian and Isthmian Leagues were the two top amateur competitions they were dominated by London based clubs so a trip to Hitchin, Wycombe, St Albans or Oxford was often considered an outing for the ‘city lads’ and the club’s hospitality was considered special!

The Canaries only left the Isthmian League in 2004 after a League re- organisation, and have already sampled life in Division One and The Premier Division of The Southern League. One of the senior clubs in Hertfordshire, Hitchin Town haven’t been among non-league elite for some years but they definitely have the pedigree!
