Hungerford Town

Altrincham Club Crest image

I make no apologies for giving this club extra space, as I am very proud to have helped in the development of Hungerford Town in the seventies as coach, manager and general manager. The sight of the club from a tiny country town on the Berkshire / Wiltshire border competing in the Southern League is very encouraging, especially as they are facing big town clubs from Poole, Merthyr and Swindon.

Outstanding football people of varying managerial experience have all helped the club to get where it is to-day. Dennis Giles, Jimmy Kelman and George Pullen laid the managerial foundations, while administrators Ron Tarry (who has held every position in the club over sixty years) and Norman Matthews (also a great Hungerford player), are still very much involved with the club, giving a lifetime of devotion.

My memories include a first magical spell in the Isthmian League, three FA Vase Semi-Finals without qualifying for a Final, The First Round of the FA Cup, three Berks & Bucks Senior Cup Finals including victories over Slough Town and Wycombe Wanders from the Isthmian Premier, playing all over the country in The Rothmans Cup and competing in the Anglo-Italian Cup which included a home tie played at Swindon Town and two games in Italy. The full England squad under Don Revie trained at the ground, FA Secretary Ted Croker opened the new club house extension and World Cup hero Roger Hunt’s ‘All Star Eleven‘ played a match against us to open the original club house, plus matches against the full touring International sides from Saudi Arabia (1-3) and Kuwait (1-0)!

For me, Hungerford Town are a special club but of course times change. The past has helped to create the character of the club but the present leaders will decide how Hungerford Town develops. Some good men have been involved and hopefully the club traditions and quality will continue and be respected for many years to come.

A fine Play-Off success at the end of the 2012-2013 season provided a great example of the progress made on and off the field. The modern Hungerford Town have now reached the Southern League Premier Division - the club’s highest ever level in the Non-League Pyramid. Congratulations to you all!
