Lancaster City

Altrincham Club Crest image

The town of Lancaster had been represented by a variety of football clubs but Lancaster Town proved to be the survivor and competed in The Lancashire Combination from 1905 to 1970 although the club’s name changed to Lancaster City in 1937.

Long serving supporters will have despaired when their club, having earned a place in The Northern Premier League in 1970, were forced to drop back to the North West Counties in 1982 after off field problems, and then within three seasons relegation took them into The NW Counties Second Division.

During these very difficult times Richard Danson gave nine years service as manager and when The Northern Premier League formed a Second Division, ‘The Dolly Blues’ who had amended their name to ’The City of Lancaster FC’ were invited to join.

This was the turning point as the club gave the impression of steading down and after nine seasons they won the championship and promotion to the Premier League under manager Alan Tinsley.

Some competitive seasons, especially under manager Tony Hesketh at the beginning of the century were followed by a little luck in 2004, when the leagues were restructured and Lancaster City were invited to join the new Conference North. However three seasons later, the wheels came off again and after finishing at the foot of the table, the club sunk into The Northern Premier League First Division North. However, the club is again showing some consistency under the guidance of Tony Hesketh, who has now completed eight seasons in two spells as manager and only twice has his club finished outside the top ten!
