Maidstone United

Currently Playing In:

Isthmian League Premier Division

Without doubt ‘The Stones’ are a club with a very special history. Having played football in the town since the club was formed in 1897, Maidstone United competed in four leagues before reaching The Isthmian League, the senior amateur competition, in 1959.

The club turned professional in 1971 so joined the Southern League, and as the driving force behind the new Football Alliance in 1979 was The Maidstone United Chairman Jim Thompson, it was no surprise that the Kent Club were one of the pace makers in the exciting new non-league competition. A look at the wonderful annual club photos gives an indication of the professionalism and spirit in the club at that time.

Sadly the club overstretched itself, having achieved their ambition of Football League membership a complete collapse took the club back to the foot of the pyramid and under the name of Maidstone Invicta, the new club set out to return at least to the top of non-league football.

The Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown led the club in a determined charge back up the levels with manager. Jason Lillis also showed great leadership for the newly formed club in the early nineties and Bill Williams has given many years of service.

Some famous players have worn the Maidstone United colours and some very well respected managers have helped the club, which still has some way to go, but with a new home, lively support and their football character and traditions, the club will surely enjoy life in The Isthmian Premier Division
