Marine

Altrincham Club Crest image

The club, formed in 1894, took its name from The Marine Hotel in Waterloo, just seven miles north of Liverpool.
Their founders were a group of students and businessmen, and as an amateur side, the club enjoyed a successful start in the Zingari League and then The Liverpool Combination from their base at Rossett Park (now known as The Aviva Stadium) which became their headquarters in 1903. An appearance in the 1931-1932 F.A.Amateur Cup Final was certainly a highlight in the club’s history, but not a great success, as they lost 1-7 at West Ham United to the then powerful London amateur ‘giants’ Dulwich Hamlet.

In 1935-36 Marine joined the professionals in The Lancashire Combination but success was limited and in 1969-1970 the club moved on to compete in The Cheshire County League. Within three seasons Roly Howard had been appointed as manager and he remained for a world record 33 year stint, in which he looked after the club in 1,975 competitive games! The club’s amateur status was dropped in 1974 and three Cheshire County League titles were won in five campaigns before the club moved on to The Northern Premier League, where they have given great service since 1979-1980.
