Newport County AFC

Altrincham Club Crest image

Another club whose loyal supporters and club officials have battled to keep ‘their football team’ alive is Newport County, whose spirited revival can be clearly seen by the progress chart. When home matches have to played as lodgers at another club, even in another country, supporters loyalty must be severely tested!

Having been a Football League club, the fall from grace was even harder to take, but the club’s drive back up the non-league ‘pyramid has been even more satisfying and indeed thrilling for the fans.

To be back in the Southern League Premier Division at the beginning of the century was celebrated by five consecutive top ten appearances after which County qualified for the new Conference South and indeed in that period they also reached The FA Cup 1st Round for the first time since the club’s ‘return’.

After two seasons of consolidation, three top ten finishes were followed by promotion as Champions under the guidance of Dean Holdsworth. Then, after a similar settling in period, a success in the thrilling Play-Offs in 2013 under Justin Edinburgh’s managerial guidance, has provided a very special new chapter to a wonderful football fairy story.
