Skelmersdale United

Currently Playing In:

Northern Premier League Premier Division

In the days of the amateur, Skelmersdale United enjoyed two spectacular FA Amateur Cup Finals at Wembley including a 4-1 victory over Dagenham in 1971.

However, back in the Cheshire County League in the new Non-league structure ‘Skem’  found it difficult to make progress, but with the formation of The North West Counties League they were placed in Division Two until northern restructing saw them moved up to Division One.This was a difficult time for the club and after nine tough years they were relegated.

However, with Russ Perkins returning for a second spell as manager, Skelmersdale were back in Division One within a couple of seasons. This time they regularly challenged in the top ten as Paul Gallagher kept up the pressure as manager and then, after promotion to the Northern Premier League, Tommy Lawson led a regular challenge in the top ten for six seasons, in which four consecutive play-offs were reached but not won.

Luck changed two years later however, when 110 goals and 102 points gave the club an outstanding title winning season and promotion to the Premier Division.
