Stafford Rangers

Currently Playing In:

Northern Premier league Premier Division

The Shropshire and Birmingham Leagues gave Stafford Rangers their first competitive football after their formation in 1876. The club moved to Marston Road for the 1896-1897 campaign and competed in the North Staffordshire League.

Further development came from spells in the Birmingham Combination and then back to the Birmingham League, but by the time of the outbreak of the Second World War the club was in financial troubles and it was disbanded for the War years.

In 1945 it was back to the Birmingham Combination, but the move up to play in the Cheshire County League was given a mixed reception by club members. The sixties brought more financial troubles and re-election was survived twice, before a recovery under the managerial guidance of Colin Hutchinson, brought them runners -up position in the Cheshire championship and earned election to The Northern Premier League for 1969-1970 season.

Rangers enjoyed ‘The Seventies’ with the 1971-1972 campaign with Roy Chapman at the helm being particularly memorable, as The League, F.A.Trophy and Staffordshire Senior Cup were all won. An F.A.Cup run to the Fourth Round was enjoyed in 1974-1975 and two more Wembley visits brought a defeat in the 1976 F.A.Trophy Final and another Trophy success in 1979.

Membership of the New Football Alliance was enjoyed in two more spells after their election as one of the original members in 1979. When first relegated in 1983, ‘Rangers’ originally dropped down to The Northern Premier League, but after a quick return and ten more years in The Conference, the club competed in The Southern League but suffered a second consecutive drop into The Midland Division.

Rangers supporters must be used to fluctuating fortunes, as can be seen by three promotions and two more relegations, but Stafford Rangers are battling on as a senior well respected Northern Premier League club.
