Stockport County

Altrincham Club Crest image

In 1900, Stockport County joined the Football League having previously been known as Heaton Norris Rovers (1883-1888) and Heaton Norris (1888-1890).

The club never really challenged their near neighbours in Manchester, but The Division Three North title was won twice and The Division Four Championship won in 1966-1967.

Sadly for ‘County’, their two seasons as challengers in Division Two brought promotion through the play offs from 4th position in 2007-2008, but immediate relegation was followed by a complete slump culminating with a second drop to The Football Conference in 2010-2011.

Most relegated Football League clubs find the first years in non-league football very difficult, as they get used to new standards, probably a new squad and often financial problems. Stockport County bravely survived their first difficult season, but sadly couldn’t fight off the threat of relegation to Conference North in the 2012-2013 campaign.
