Sutton United are well over 100 years old and have enjoyed an impressive history since they first kicked a ball in 1898. The club competed in The Sutton Junior and Southern Suburban Leagues until 1920, when they joined The Athenian League and after winning three Championships they moved on to The Isthmian League.

Two Amateur Cup Finals at Wembley in 1963 and 1969 were watched by a total of 92,400 but sadly for ‘The U’s,‘ both games were lost, as was their FA Trophy Final in 1981.

The club earned a good reputation when winning The Anglo-Italian Tournament in 1979 and reaching the finals in 1980 and 1982, but their most famous result was probably their 2-1 FA Cup victory over Coventry City from The First Division (the top division at the time) who had won The Final at Wembley just two years earlier.
.
Having won The Isthmian Championship in 1986, Sutton United moved up to The Conference where they spent five seasons with three top ten finishes and a lowest place of twelfth. The club seemed to be holding its own comfortably but a loss of form in the 1990-1991 campaign left them in the relegation zone with a drop back to Isthmian football.

A second spell in The Conference was earned when the 1998-1999 season produced an outstanding Championship success with United finishing eleven points ahead of second placed Aylesbury United, also winning The Surrey Senior Cup and The Guardian Insurance League Cup. Sadly, their stay in the Conference only lasted one season, but they are rebuilding steadily and attempting to ensure they regain the fine reputation enjoyed in the years when they were considered one of their country’s best non-league clubs.
