Tonbridge Angels

Tonbridge Football Club was formed a few years after the Seond World War and joined The Southern League for the 1948-1949 season with Chingford Town, Hastings United and Kidderminster Harriers bringing membership up to twenty two. The champions that year were Gillingham and Tonbridge finished in twentieth position.

The club haven’t enjoyed F.A.Cup success in recent years but in the three first seasons in the fifties they reached the First Round Proper in each campaign, losing each time in replays to Chelmsford City, Aldershot and Norwich City

Initially middle of the table finishes were enjoyed in the Southern League, but in 1961-62 Tonbridge dropped into Divison One for a couple of seasons. and after bouncing back for another two campaigns a second relegation in 1965-66 signalled a really bad slump in fortunes and ‘the sixties’ ended with the Kent club rock bottom of Southern Divison One for two seasons.

The 1988-1989 campaign saw the end of the Tonbridge club’s battle to establish themselves as a successful Southern League club. Relegation to the Kent League brought more success on the field but a return to the Southern League four seasons later didn’t bring any great success.

However, a change of name to Tonbridge Angels in 1998, was followed by four top ten finishes culminating with promotion and a change of League to join The Isthmians in 2004. After an initial struggle to settle in new surroundings,Tonbridge under managerial guidance from Tony Dolby and latterly Tommy Warrilow, became an Isthmian power and deservedly won promotion to Blue Square South in 2012.
