Winchester City

Currently Playing In:

Southern league Division One South West

One of the oldest Southern clubs, Winchester City although formed in 1884, remained in local football for over a hundred years. Representing one of the county’s most famous cities, the club with the nickname of ‘The Capitals’ competed in The Hampshire League until they qualified for The Southern League in 1971.

Two seasons later the club returned to the county competition where they remained until enjoying the best spell in their history. The second Hampshire championship brought a move up to The Wessex League where a wonderful sequence of 1st, 2nd and 1st again took ‘ The Capitals’ into The Southern League.

Having also won The FA Vase in 2004,  the club celebrated their best years but once again the Southern League spell was a short one. However, the return to the Wessex League only lasted two seasons and the club were promoted as champions for their third spell in the Southern League.

Unless one is involved within a club, it is difficult to understand it’s confidence swings and the atmosphere within. Winchester City celebrated a championship and promotion at the end of the 2011-2012 campaign and then must have felt terrible misery one year later. Club members will know the story but its confusing to the rest of the football world.
