North West Counties Premier league

Although formed in 1883, ‘The Blues’ have competed in comparatively few different leagues. Early seasons were enjoyed in The Combination and after The First World Warthe progressive Cheshire County League provided good local competition.

By the time the league was disbanded and the North Western clubs were re-organized in The North West Counties League, Winsford United had become a regular challenger for honours.

So when The Northern Premier League expanded with a second division in 1987, Winsford United were ready to move up and after five seasons gained promotion to The Premier Division.

This was the highest level in which the club had competed and a first season finish in the runners up spot was a superb effort. Sadly, this standard was difficult to repeat and after eight campaigns at this level, the club suffered its worst period in its history with three relegations in four seasons. So the club were back in North West Counties Division One.

However, supporters will be encouraged by the championship and promotion in 2007 and the club’s steady consolidation in The Premier Division despite regular managerial changes.
