FA Vase Third Round - December 6th
Clubs playing in the FA Vase can change their ambitions and standards from season to season. So until a few rounds of the national competition, usually drawn on a regional basis, have been played, clubs with new ambitions and stronger squads may not have shown their potential.
The North East always provide a massive challenge in The FA Vase and already Dunston UTS, Newcastle Benfield, Shildon, North Shields, Seaham Red Star,Whitley Bay and Consett are all safely through to theThird Round.
One result that may be a surprise was provided by Shaw Lane Aquaforce who had been promoted to the Northern Counties East Premier Division and who travelled to West Auckland Town and won 3-0.
Impressive victories early in the competition such as these, give confidence to the successful clubs and their supporters will wonder whether it will be their FA Vase year :-
Consett 8 Whickham 0
Causeway United 1 Walsall Wood 5
East Preston 0 Flackwell Heath 8
Westfield 1 Tunbridge Wells 5
Bodmin Town 5 St Blazey 2
High scoring games are great for the spectators who certainly got value for money at these exciting ties:-
Alnwick Town 4 St Helens Town 5 aet
Saffron Walden Town 6 Kings Langley 5 aet
Wembley 3 Brantham Athletic 4
Abingdon United 4 Littlehampton Town 4 aet
Verwood Town 5 Plymouth Parkway 4
With the constant changing of clubs names and standards after their financial problems, it can be difficult to accept the strengths of new names in the competition. Two Sunday fixtures in this round saw Worksop Town FC (Northern Counties East) beat Ellistown & Ibstock United (Leicestershire Senior League) 2-1 and the once famous Bishop Auckland FC ( Northern League Division One) lost 1-4 at home to 1874 Northwich FC (North West Counties Premier).
Round Three will be contested by the last 64 clubs in this season’s FA Vase, the betting will probably favour the Northern League clubs but there are usually at least two surprise challengers will emerge.
