FAVase Fifth Round

10 February 2015

Six of the eight FA Vase ties defied the weather and AFC St Austell, a Step Six club enjoying home advantage, attracted 877 and beat Stanway Rovers 2-0 with a goal in each half. They are currently fourth with games in hand in The South West Peninsular League.

The other minnow was AFC Mansfield from The Northern Counties East Division One, but they were soundly beaten 3-0 in front of 604, by their own Premier League leaders, the much fancied Tadcaster Albion.

The Northern League Vase favourites, North Shields were drawn at home to Phoenix Sports of the Southern Counties East and 1,092, the best Vase crowd of the day, were treated to a fine 4-1 home victory.

Ascot United enjoyed a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Norwich United, while the West Country pairing was won by Highworth Town, 2-0 away to Bradford Town in Wiltshire.

A new name to be featuring in the later FA Vase rounds is Shaw Lane Aquaforce, from The Northern Counties East. They beat Flackwell Heath in a 3-2 thriller and are currently third behind Tadcaster, so with the Northern League’s North Shields, the North East of England are once again providing the favourites for another Wembley success.

The two postponed ties at Glossop and Holbeach will hopefully be played this week and were of course involved in the Quarter Final draw to be played on 28th February.

AFC St Austell (4th in The South West Peninsular) v Ascot United ( 5th in Hellenic League)

Holbeach Utd (3rd in Utd Counties) or Erith & Belvedere (2nd in Southern Counties East) v North Shields (4th in The Northern League)

Shaw Lane Aquaforce (3rd in Northern Counties East) v Glossop North East (2nd in North West Counties) or Dunston UTS (6th Northern League)

Highworth Town (8th in Hellenic Lg) v Tadcaster Rovers  (1st in Northern Counties East)

It’s certainly a tough round with the favourites drawn away from home!
