The Wembley Experience

11 March 2014

This weekend Wigan Athletic won against Manchester City at Etihad in an FA Cup Quarter Final and will go on to play Arsenal in the semi-final at Wembley Stadium.  Last season Wigan, as complete underdogs actually beat Manchester City in the FA Cup Final at Wembley but they were also relegated from the Premier League.

So was it worth it? Did the excitement of Wembley affect their league performances?

Well, this season in non-league football, Gosport Borough a small club trying to establish themselves in the Conference South are currently right at the bottom of that league and will probably be relegated.

BUT they have played seven FA Trophy matches and qualified for the final at Wembley only conceding two goals in those seven games.  The supporters and players are obviously thrilled with the idea of playing a Final at Wembley Stadium in non-league football’s equivalent of the FA Cup.  Obviously, in a perfect world Gosport will enjoy Wembley on 23rd March and then win all their remaining league games and avoid relegation - but that’s a dream!

So, do you think the Wembley appearance (which many players and supporters never experience) is worth being relegated?  I think it is!
