THREE CLUBS LOOKING STRONG FOR PROMOTION ALREADY
Many Conference clubs were concentrating on FA Trophy ties last week-end but the Step Three Premier Divisions saw their leaders strengthen their positions. Maidstone United now have four games in hand over Margate, who are just three points ahead. Poole Town have five games in hand over Corby Town and Skelmersdale United still lead Curzon Ashton by five points although they have played three games more.
The threat of relegation is proving difficult to avoid as Lewes, who have only lost once in their last ten games, are still in 20th position although it looks as if Bury are out of touch at the foot of the Isthmian table.
One club giving their supporters plenty to cheer is East Thurrock United, who have scored in all their last eighteen games, except the 0-1 defeat by Hartlepool United in the FA Cup.
Boreham Wood also failed to score in their FA Cup tie against Concord Rangers, but they have scored in every one of their other 24 matches, and they haven’t conceded in their last three league games.
Clubs hoping the Christmas spirit will improve their luck, will be Leamington, with no victories in eleven games and Staines with one win in fourteen. But poor form can be overcome, as Skelmersdale United found out when, as leaders of the Northern Premier League, they failed to win six consecutive matches but still remained top of the table!
In the same league, Witton Albion suffered a run of twelve consecutive defeats but they have won three of their last five league games, scoring eleven goals, and are only one point away from a safe position.
Great news from Stamford, who attracted an encouraging 819 attendance at the opening of their new Zeeco Arena but its victories that also thrill supporters and Ilkeston have just completed a run of six wins with a goal tally of 14-5 and have moved up to fourth position in The Northern Premier League.
